Some of the most picturesque neighborhoods are located in Society Hill and Queen Village, which are directly south of Old City. Though tony today (and a name to match), Society Hill was actually named for a colonial society of tradesmen and administrators employed by William Penn.
Originally known as the Dock Ward, Society Hill is one of Philadelphia's oldest neighborhoods. Serious restoration efforts begin in the 1950's, and today the neighborhood is one of Philly's most coveted addresses. Quaint Franklin-style street lamps, cobblestone streets and gorgeous Federal and Georgian-era townhouses create a romantic cityscape. Washington Square is a city gem. Lined with period homes and hi-rise architecture, its architectural diversity is emblematic of a city that blends old and new. Stop by Cafe Walnut, on the park at 7th, for a pick-me-up.
To the south, Queen Village was historically known as Southwark, one of Philadelphia's first suburbs. Philly's thriving Fabric Row is located 4th St. and continues century-long tradition. A prime entertainment district, Queen Village is anchored by South Street, a lively stretch of bohemian shops, hip restaurants and art venues. Of many noteworthy points, the Old Swedes' Church, completed in 1700, is a must-see. There's an abundance of low-key dining spots in this neighborhood, including Cry Baby Pasta on S. 3rd and Felly Bistro on Pass.
Both Society Hill and Queen Village offer spectacularly revived 18th century homes, with low-rise condos interspersed throughout these culturally rich neighborhoods.
